Flag Cake + Slackers!

You guys are slackin' off! I have not been able to successfully stalk what you guys have been up to because no one is posting!

So I invested way too much time in making this cake- but it was really fun! Did not turn out as amazing as I hoped but when it comes down to it, who cares? I 100% copied the idea from one of the many blogs I frequently stalk for food ideas, make it and love it. You can use that link to see the flag cake how-to.

OF COURSE... I messed up and the blue part of the cake didn't turn out as well. I poured the white batter in before I remembered to add the blue coloring. Again, oh well.

I colored coconut shavings blue and threw them on the outside over a very yummy frosting! Seriously, if you want a basic vanilla frosting that is pretty amazingly sweet, try it.

Yummy Vanilla Frosting:

- 5 T Flour
- 1 Cup Milk
- 1 tsp Vanilla (I used about double)
- 1 Cup Butter (I used a little more than half that)
- 1 cup granulated sugar (not powdered)

In a small saucepan, whisk flour into milk and heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens. You want it to be very thick, thicker than cake mix, more like a brownie mix. Remove from heat and let it cool to room temperature. It must be completely cool before you use it in the next step. Stir in vanilla.
While the mixture is cooling, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. You don’t want any sugar graininess left. Then add the completely cooled milk/flour/vanilla mixture and beat the living daylights out of it. If it looks separated, you haven’t beaten it enough! Beat it until it all combines and resembles whipped cream.

  1. Holy Smokes! That cake is amazing. It's almost 11 at night, and I want nothing more than to eat mass amounts of it right now. It's a good thing I am not close enough to drive to your house and hi-jack it from you!
